What's so special about this course?
* We specialize in addressing violence against women and girls:
Violence against women and girls has a unique dynamic. While most martial arts and self-defense systems focus on physical confrontations between men, we address the physical, psychological and sociological aspects of violence against women and girls.
* Female/Male Team Teaching:
Your course is led by a female instructor/coach and a male instructor who dons protective equipment so he can safely play the role of the aggressor. Partnering men and women in the teaching process helps you gain a broader perspective on healthy vs. unhealthy relationships and the place of all human beings in stopping gender-based and relationship-based violence.
* Learning through Doing:
Through a series of simulations of threats, confrontations and violence (physical, verbal, emotional and sexual), you will have a chance to apply your skills under stress but in a safe and supportive environment. As you overcome each challenge, your nervous system learns to act rather than freeze and your body and mind absorb the skills you have been taught until they become your own.
3 Things You Should Know Before The Next Step
1. Self-defense Training does not replace the need for systemic change.
Violence against women is a complex phenomenon and in order to eradicate it there is a need for systemic action. Practicing personal safety skills is not equivalent to taking responsibility for changing the phenomenon of violence. In fact, we find that women and girls who learn to protect themselves in their day-to-day lives become even more passionate about and empowered to address issues of systemic change.
2. Violence is always the responsibility of those who choose to be violent.
Women and girls learn self-defense to expand their choices in situations in which they feel they might be harmed. Only the woman in the situation can make that choice. Choosing not to act is a legitimate choice. No matter how the woman / girl responds, the offender who threatens, harasses or attacks is fully responsible for what results.
3. Only you can decide what is right for you.
You are the expert on yourself. Only you can choose which strategy is right for you and which tools you will use and adopt. Your power begins now. The only one who will know if we are the right choice for you… is you.
